What is V.C.A. (Vermi Compost Activator)

V.C.A. is a product that has been continually developed over the last 10 years by Worms Direct UK. When a colony of worms are fed on organic waste products such as kitchen waste, animal manures or waste products from paper manufacturing or food processing, this waste has to have started decomposing or breaking down for it to be in a form that the worms can feed on, this decomposition is caused by the action of many different forms of micro life, including bacteria, fungii etc. as more fresh waste is added the population of micro life increases rapidly, when worms feed, this along with any nutrients are taken up and digested by the worms, this is then expelled by the worms as "casts" these casts are very high in microbes and nutrients, when these casts are mixed back with the very fine compost not digested by the worms you have a product known as "vermicompost" If the vermicompost is then added to fresh waste the microbe life immediately innoculates the fresh waste to start decomposition, they need to do this in order to increase their population. At Worms Direct, this compost has been taken and refined to enable it to be used as a superb compost activator.

How is V.C.A. used?

When a new compost bin or compost heap is started, a handful of V.C.A. is sprinkled over the first new layer, as subsequent layers are added it is beneficial to continue to add a handful of V.C.A. The first handful has acted as the activator, subsequent handfulls act as an accelerator.
V.C.A. is 100% organic, contains no added chemicals, has no smell (except a bit earthy) has a long shelf life and is safe to handle (although as with all natural products we would recommend washing your hands before eating your sandwich!)
V.C.A. can also be used as an additive to dry, sterile, lifeless potting composts, used at the rate of a handful added to 2 litres of compost will transform the quality of growth of plants, similarly, it can be sprinkled into planting trenches, holes etc in the vegetable and flower beds, let your plant roots get a bit of life into them!
